The reasons for such a decision are quite obvious: the financial results of the gaming division are falling quarter by quarter, there is no mention of net profits, and console sales last year - according to circulating information - may not have even reached one million units.
Interestingly, these reports were indirectly confirmed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella himself in his recent interview with New York Times. He noted that for 25 years the corporation has invested huge funds in Xbox and now it is time to transform it into a stable, self-sufficient business. The situation has gone so far that YouTube currently earns more from Xbox games than Microsoft itself!
Still, fans have no reason to panic yet. A final decision on the restructuring has not been made and already announced games will not be canceled. On the contrary - the head of Xbox, Asha Sharma, gave a direct order to accelerate work on such long-awaited hits as The Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5 or the new installment of Halo. Although how studios are supposed to speed up production after a wave of mass layoffs remains a big mystery.
